Surviving the Storm

Mixed Media Pastel Drawing by Chelsie Nicole

“This drawing sat unprotected on my easel when a tornado ripped off the roof of my studio. It somehow survived unharmed.

The work is part of a series of deep reflection, documenting this season in my life when the contrast is so harsh, I sometimes misinterpret the value sets.

I am struggling with the oppressive bondage of archaic gender roles. I am still seeking balance in my role as a mother, wife, and a professional artist. And I am haunted by grief. I am also coming to terms with a new version of myself, the version where I am no longer a marathon runner, but a cardiac patient.

As I gaze upon goals now far outside of my reach, I celebrate my inner strength and remember that like this drawing I am a survivor and despite all odds, I’m still standing.”
